Have you recently been pressured into signing a long-term contract, upgrading to Internet speeds you don’t need, or buying services you don’t understand? You’re not alone.
There have been a few times in the past months when our local Internet Service Providers (ISP) like Cox and AT&T have overstepped, oversold, and come very close to taking advantage of some of our current and potential clients. That’s really disappointing to us.
I understand why it’s happening, for years they have used business clients as “cash cows,” but haven’t really invested in their infrastructure. The ISP industry has become a commodity, where the provider with the fastest service and the lowest price usually wins the business.
As a result, we’re seeing a few things happen that I want to make sure you’re aware of.
Don’t sign a 3, 4, or 5 year contract for ANYTHING in the technology space, especially your Internet service. It may cost you more today, but I guarantee you that it will be either cheaper next year, or you’ll get better speed at the same price.
Often in the pursuit of speed and productivity, an ISP will sell you on WAY more speed than you need and it won’t be noticeable at your desktop. Either because of other bottlenecks, or you just can’t work fast enough to see the difference.
This is a holdover from the days when we got a discount for having HBO, ESPN, and MTV on our cable service. Now ISPs are trying to see you on a “managed router” or “managed wifi.” Both of these are duplicates of services that we provide you and in most cases will limit our ability to secure and support your network. I promise, you DON’T need them. It’s just an attempt by your ISP to try and increase the monthly revenue from you and you’ll end up paying way more in the end and get support that probably doesn’t meet your needs.
So, What should you do? Call us. If you’re already a OneSource client, talk to your Technical Consultant. If you’re not a client, but this sounds familiar, call us for a no cost and no obligation conversation about your needs. All the parts of the tech universe work best when they’re aligned. That’s where we come in.
