Passkeys Are Coming to Microsoft 365

Technology is always evolving, and sometimes those changes make everyday tasks a little simpler. Microsoft’s upcoming move to passkeys is one of those changes. 

Beginning September 1, 2026, Microsoft will begin making passkeys the default way to sign in to Microsoft 365. Over time, older authentication methods like SMS and voice-call verification will be phased out in favor of this newer, more secure approach. 

What Is a Passkey? 

A passkey lets you sign in using your device instead of a traditional password. Depending on the device you’re using, that might mean your fingerprint, facial recognition, or a PIN. 

Because passkeys don’t rely on passwords or text-message verification codes, they’re much more resistant to phishing attacks and account compromise while also making the sign-in process quicker for users. 

What Does This Mean for Your Business? 

For most organizations, this change will simply become part of the normal evolution of Microsoft 365.
