Spotlight on United Methodist Open Door: Serving Our Community with Compassion and Hope

The mission of United Methodist Open Door (UMOD) is simple but powerful: to meet basic human needs, promote positive life changes, restore hope, and protect human dignity. Every day, Open Door has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands in our community. Their services focus on supporting the estimated 62,000 people in our area living in poverty.

In Kansas, underemployment and low household income are driving factors behind the high demand for food assistance. Seventy-two percent of families who rely on food pantries live at or below the federal poverty line. At United Methodist Open Door, 56 percent of the families served through the Community Food Ministry report annual incomes of less than $10,000. Beyond income challenges, 80 percent of Kansas families who use food pantries struggle to consistently provide enough nutritious meals for their household.

The need for housing support is just as urgent. On January 25, 2024, a one-day “snapshot” count revealed 691 people experiencing literal homelessness in Sedgwick County—living on the streets, in their cars, or in shelters (not counting those staying temporarily with friends, family, or in motels). This number reflects a slight decrease from 2023. However, of these 691 individuals, 188—or 21 percent—were unsheltered, marking a 25 percent increase from the previous year. These numbers come from the annual U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Point-in-Time count.

In response to this growing need, (UMOD) offers support through its Homeless Resource Center and the Family Rapid Re-Housing Program, helping individuals and families find stability, safety, and a path forward.

United Methodist Open Door also recognizes that access to nutritious food is foundational for positive change. The organization provides two essential food programs:

  • Community Food Ministry: The largest emergency food-box program in the area, offering nutritionally balanced food to those facing crisis.
  • Commodity Supplemental Food Program: A USDA-supported monthly food box designed for income-eligible individuals aged 60 and over.

Beyond food and housing, UMOD helps people prepare for work, school, and daily life through the Klothes Kloset, which offers free, gently used clothing for infants, children, and adults. Clean, appropriate clothing can make all the difference when someone is applying for a job, attending school, or simply seeking dignity in their daily life. The Klothes Kloset is stocked entirely through generous donations from individuals, businesses, faith communities, and local organizations.

Through these essential services, United Methodist Open Door continues to be a lifeline for our most vulnerable neighbors—bringing hope, dignity, and practical support to those who need it most.

There are many ways you can get involved in United Methodist Open Door’s mission. Monetary donations are always appreciated. You can also make In-Kind donations like food, clothing, laundry detergent, hygiene items, even office supplies! UMOD relies heavily on volunteers. Any and all support is greatly appreciated!
