A Home with a Heart: Supporting Wichita’s Children in Crisis

For over 135 years, the Wichita Children’s Home (WCH) has been a place of safety and hope for children in crisis. Founded in 1888, WCH serves youth from birth to age 24 who have faced abuse, neglect, human trafficking, grief, and homelessness. With a strong mission, a commitment to overcoming challenges, and deep community involvement, WCH continues to be a vital resource for vulnerable children and families across Kansas.

The Mission of the Wichita Children’s Home

At the heart of WCH is a simple yet powerful belief: every child deserves safety, care, and the opportunity to heal. The home provides comprehensive support for children facing the most difficult circumstances, helping them transform struggles into strengths. Last year alone, WCH served 1,838 youth across 36 Kansas counties, offering emergency shelter, foster care placement, counseling, and specialized programs tailored to their unique needs.

The Challenges

Children who come to WCH have often endured experiences that no one should have to face. Many have survived:

  • Abuse & Neglect – Over 1,500 children per year receive safe shelter and care.
  • Human Trafficking – Victims are provided immediate services and trauma-informed counseling to support recovery.
  • Homelessness – Programs like Safe Place and BRIDGES help youth find stability and independence.
  • Pregnancy & Parenting – Young parents under 21 receive residential support and guidance for building a better future.
  • Grief – Kidzcope offers peer-based bereavement services for children who have lost parents or siblings.

WCH meets these challenges head-on by providing not only shelter but also the tools and support necessary for healing and long-term success.

Community Involvement: Strength in Partnership

Wichita Children’s Home thrives because of the generosity and dedication of the community. Just as early community members united to help a family in crisis, today’s WCH relies on partnerships with individuals, businesses, and organizations to continue its mission. Donations, volunteer work, and advocacy all play a role in ensuring that these children receive the care they need.

With every act of kindness, our neighbors help us provide the stability and support these children deserve. Whether it’s through financial contributions, mentorship, or spreading awareness, community involvement makes a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable youth.
