At the heart of the Kansas Humane Society (KHS) is a simple but powerful mission: creating a happy community for pets and people. The Challenges Facing Animal Welfare Today

Like shelters across the country, the Kansas Humane Society is facing the growing challenge of pet overpopulation and shelter overcrowding. Too many animals are entering shelters, and not enough are leaving fast enough. One of the most effective ways to address this issue is through spaying and neutering pets, which significantly reduces the number of unwanted litters.

They walk dogs, cuddle cats, wash dishes and do laundry, assist in the veterinary clinic, help at events, and essentially run the KHS Retail Store. With such a wide variety of opportunities, there is a role for everyone.

Fostering is another critical way to support the shelter. Foster families help expand the walls of KHS by caring for pets in their homes, allowing the shelter to save more lives. There is a particular need for adult dog fosters, and these volunteers play a vital role in giving pets a second chance.

For those who may not have time to volunteer, becoming a monthly donor is a meaningful way to make a lasting impact. Additional options include donating from the shelter’s wishlist, making a one-time monetary donation, or attending and supporting KHS events.

Monetary donations create the greatest immediate impact for KHS. Every dollar is carefully stretched to provide the highest level of care possible for the animals served.
