IT isn’t about finding the newest solution. It’s about understanding the problem well enough to find the right one.
One of our engineers recently helped a manufacturing client whose critical equipment depended on an aging industrial computer running MS-DOS 6.22. The system was out of support, and the hard drive was failing. The equipment manufacturer decided that replacement was the only option.
A $250,000 replacement may ultimately be part of the answer, but it didn’t have to be the first answer. Our first priority was to protect the client from losing critical data, stabilize the existing system, and create enough breathing room to make a good long-term decision.
Before anything else, we focused on risk mitigation. We preserved the data from the failing drive, created a complete disk image, and verified that the image could be used to recreate the system.
Then came the fun part: finding hardware old enough to actually work with software and equipment designed decades ago. A modern replacement drive wasn’t compatible. Fortunately, an old laptop in the engineer’s basement happened to contain a 5GB IDE drive that was. After some careful configuration, the system was back up and the client’s operation could resume while they worked with a local automation engineer on a long-term upgrade path.
This is one of the things we value about experienced IT problem-solving. Technology knowledge matters, but so do curiosity, creativity, careful risk management, and the ability to work within the reality of a client’s environment. Newer technology isn’t always the answer. Sometimes it’s knowing enough about the old technology to keep the business moving while you figure out what’s next.
